The design process for Lincoln Heights High School, a small charter school in Los Angeles that accommodates 180 students, began with a deep exploration of the school's pedagogy. Each classroom was designed to perform to its designated practice of instruction, using its location in relation to the steep hillside site to its advantage. The building as a whole works as a diagram to the particular pedagogy of the school--a hybrid of the Nueva School Method and Teach for America's teaching principles.
The St. Lawrence Marketplace and Courts site aims to integrate a very public program type (an open-air marketplace) with a program type that necessitates privacy in certain circumstances (a courthouse.) Administrative office spaces were also included and required the highest level of privacy. The St. Lawrence Marketplace and Courts explores how vastly different program types and typologies could work in tandem in one space.

This passive ventilation envelope system was designed for use in mild desert climates such as Los Angeles. Because the average year temperature high is 78 degrees, a passive ventilation system allows the air to flow through the building, creating a comfortable breeze for much of the year. The system will have to be supplemented during the hottest time of the year, August through October, with additional cooling and ventilation.
